Anatomy Trains®

Anatomy Trains® maps the ‘anatomy of connection’ — relationships between muscles and fascia, which is the continuous web of connective tissue that surrounds every cell and serves as an organ of structure. Anatomy Trains Myofascial Meridians provides a framework for a new understanding of whole-body patterning in posture and function – the interplay of movement and stability – and shows how to resolve movement and posture compensations in a way that no analysis of any single muscle can give.

Balance

Jean Couch directs The Balance Center in Palo Alto, CA. She oversees teachers, teaches public classes, and leads teacher trainings at her studio and at Esalen. The primary focus of The Balance Center is to present the alignment and movement guidelines distilled from the research of Noelle Perez.

Bones for Life®

The Bones for Life program uses simple, gentle movement sequences to stimulate bone health by directing force through the skeleton. These sequences also help to improve overall body organization and self-usage so that vulnerable joints are protected.

CranioSacral Therapy

CST is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system – comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Using a soft touch generally no greater than 5 grams, or about the weight of a nickel, practitioners release restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system.

Meridian Stretching

After a car accident, Bob Cooley gradually developed Resistance Flexibility and Strength training to restore his own ability to function and be pain-free. The program systematically stretches and strengthens 16 major muscle groups — 8 in the arms and 8 in the legs. Bob relates these muscles to the energy meridians used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture. As a result, each stretch is named after a body organ. He maintains that improving the tone and health of a muscle through which an energy line runs can have a positive impact on that energy line and the related organ. I like this program because I consider it a safe and smart way to target individual muscles. If having a workout is your cup of tea, this is a great way to do it. Resistance levels can be ramped up or down to satisfy professional athletes as well as people with fibromyalgia.

Pelvic Rotator Cuff Institute

Janet Hulme, M.A., P.T., works to educate physical therapists and other bodywork and movement practitioners about a synergistic team of muscles that she calls the pelvic rotator cuff. This team includes some of the internal and external hip rotators, abdominal and low back muscles and the pelvic and breathing diaphragms. Restoring balance and proper function to these muscles can prevent and reverse: incontinence, organ prolapse, and back pain. Participants have also noticed increased balance in standing and walking with a reduced risk of falls.

Yoga

The science of Yoga was first developed in India thousands of years ago. It is a mind / body health and wellness system that encompasses a wide range of teachings and techniques. All branches of Yoga are committed to cultivating health and to supporting  personal and spiritual growth.

Kim first attended teacher training with Bikram Choudhury. Bikram Yoga is a challenging sequence of 26 basic poses and 2 breathing exercises to be practiced in 90 minute sessions in a heated room (usually 105°).

In Progress

Kim is currently enrolled in Spacial Dynamics, Level 1. Spacial Dynamics is the study and enhancement of the relationship between the human being and space through various movement technques and activities. Participants become skilled at recreating dynamics that reconnect, regenerate, and reintegrate, thus replacing dis-ease with ease. Level 1 trainees meet for 20 days each year for five years. Kim expects to create this program in 2013.

Spacial Dynamics: Reflexes: Prisons or Portals
All human babies are born with the same reflexes — grasping, sucking, startle, various neck reflexes, etc. Ideally, the reflexes get integrated during the first years of life, but sometimes one or more are retained. Retained reflexes interfere with the ability of the individual to respond freely to the world around them and can wreak havoc with body alignment. At the training, we learned how to identify retained reflexes and some tools for integrating them. On a personal level, I am finally resolving some very stubborn postural quirks and tensions that turn out to be reflex related. As a teacher, I can now see that many students who struggle with particular poses are dealing with retained reflexes. With my new skills, I am better able to help them find real ease and new freedom in all their movements.
